You would be hard pressed to find someone here in Denver who hasn’t heard of the Flobots. An extremely talented locally bred band of seven musicians (including a viola player and a trumpet player!), the Flobots’ break out hit “Handlebars” has been heard all over the country and just keeps gaining momentum. They’ve appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Carson Daly Show, as well as receiving awesome rotation in a number of radio stations.

If you haven’t heard of them yet, you should do whatever it takes to get your hands on a copy of “Fight With Tools”, their latest release. The lyrics are catchy and carry a strong message of Peace and Change, and the music is nothing short of genius. I am a huge music head and when I heard “Handlebars” for the first time I got goosebumps. It’s hard to describe the feeling that really great music gives you, but you know it when you feel it.

Formed in 2005, they have been bringing their positive message and amazing crowds ever since. One shouldn’t try to put them in any particular category, as their unique instrumentation and double emcee front men allow them to cross over from hip hop to alternative to rock and just about everything in between. “Fight With Tools” was released locally in October of 2007, but just last month was released nationwide to anxious fans everywhere. They have truly become one of Denver’s most celebrated bands, and they deserve it. Not only are they spreading the word of peace through their music, but they have created Flobots.Org, a site that advocates change and encourages people of all ages to join together and make their communities a better place through community service, teaching peace, and reaching out to those who need help.

The Flobots are currently on tour and if they come to your town you should check them out, you won’t be disappointed.

Built in 1913, the Bluebird has gone through many faces in its 95 years of operation after starting out as a movie house. It began its life as a music venue in 1994, and has been rocking Denver ever since. The Bluebird has played host to a number of musicians of all types, including jazz violinist Jean Luc-Ponty, folk/indie singer Dar Williams, and big name acts such as Ladytron, Oasis, and Filter.

All of the shows put on at the theater are 16+, giving younger music fans a chance to see the bands they love that they might not get at a larger venue, which could require concert goers to be over 18. Laid out in three tiers, it boasts a full bar at the top and an expansive balcony from which you can see the entire theater. With great acoustics and a nice sized stage, there isn’t a bad seat in the house!

Located at 3317 E. Colfax Ave, The Bluebird is on Colfax proper between 16th and 14th Avenues, and can be reached on the Route 15 bus line. You can call the Bluebird directly at 303-377-1666, or online.

Tickets are available online or at the box office. The box office opens 30 minutes before the doors open to any show. Prices for shows vary, as do camera allowances. Check with the theater beforehand if you have any questions.

One on One, a Motown tribute band will be playing at The Soiled Dove Underground for a special Valentine’s Night Treat. An elegant evening of dinner, drinks and dancing with the one you desire- or a group of friends with whom you want to reminisce.

It is cold Cold COLD outside- a perfect time for an indoor musical adventure. Stop on in to one of Denver’s premiere home grown music stores- Twist & Shout. The name itself warms your soul with the feel of nostalgia and a leaning toward the future. To say Twist & Shout is only a music store would be incorrect, they also offer a unique line of collectibles, bags, cards, and hip outer wear.

However, it is first and foremost a Music Store to the ’nth degree. Looking for used and/or new cd’s or do you still yearn for vinyl? Twist & Shout has it all. Including listening stations to sample that band you have always heard of- but could never find on the radio. One could spend hours simply browsing.

And now, in the wake of their one year anniversary in their new location beside The Tattered Cover on east Colfax, they have launched: Our Favorite Things – a Zine full of facts, theories, rants and opinions about the physical world and staff reviews of the newest indie releases. It challenges you to read, think, share!

I rock out to KBCO all day at work and I have to say they play really great music and have some awesome people DJing. I especially like listening to the Morning show, with bits like Stump the Sage on Wednesday mornings. I have to say, he knows much much more than I do about music in general.

Candy Canes on Ice- A perfect freezing temperature helped bid farewell to The Candy Cane Festival for one more year..
Broncos played Kansas City and defeated them 41 to 7.
Snow came to town and just kept coming.
Colorado Symphony performed Tchaikovsky.
Disney on Ice kicked off their week long Princess Wishes stint here in Denver.
The Avs faced the St. Louis Blues and showed the ‘Can’ a victory of 9 to 5.
Dane Cook cooked up two shows in a row at The Wells Fargo Theatre.
Cheryl Wheeler and Peter Mulvey played at Swallow Hill.
Aimee Mann’s 2nd Annual Christmas Show jingled through Boulder.
