Spare Change?

by Alicia on December 10th, 2007

Quick! Take out a handful of change!

Look carefully on the coin’s face. Do you see a little D, or a P? If you see a D, then you’re holding a coin that was minted right here in Denver!

That’s right! There is a United States Mint in downtown Denver, and if you want to, you can take a tour of it! If you can’t make it in person, they also have virtual tours available. Reservations are required, and you can make them through the website (which is recommended) or through the walk up window at the Visitor’s Center on Cherokee Street between 14th Avenue and Colfax. If there is space available near a tour’s time, walk-ups without reservations are allowed, but generally the tours fill up fast and you still have to visit the walk up window.

Also, please note all of the things you cannot bring with you on a tour, which includes things like cameras (which breaks my heart a little) and camera enabled cell phones. The tours are free and happen every day from 8 am to 2 pm, every hour on the hour.

In addition to seeing the coins actually being made and inspected, the Mint has artifacts from the early days of minting and an impressive collection of money and coins from throughout the world.
