Lights of the City

If you have ever been to Denver during the holidays- chances are your host took you to see the City and County Building. If you haven’t ever been to Denver for the holidays- The City and County Building is reason enough for a visit. Every year there is an anticipation in the air, wondering if the building located at 1437 Bannock Street in Denver will be as stunning as the year before- and every year, we Denverites are not disappointed.
Of course, all pretty things have some controversy and The City and County Building is not immune. There is a Nativity Scene and many believe its presence on city property is a violation of the separation of Church and State. The decorators try and off set, or balance, the Nativity with a general non religious display, but it is a glaring dichotomous sight. Thankfully, that isn’t what most of us go to see. These displays are on the steps and can be fun or thoughtful, yet it is the Lights decorating the building itself that stop traffic. Literally. When you go you cannot turn onto Bannock from 14th or from Colfax, as it is blocked off. That shouldn’t stop you from going or turn you away- just park where you can and walk up to the building. It will take your breath away.
When it is decorated and lit up with over 40,000 floodlights it is considered the largest outdoor lighting display in the nation. Not bad for a one horse city?! The lights stay illuminated every night through the Stock Show, which happens January 12 – 27, 2008.
