Dreaming In Denver

I am the child of a Denver Native and a Boston Transplant. Growing up in Denver with a mother who had an accent was a novelty. My brothers, friends and I would dream of the exciting and exotic world my Mother came from- the land of New England!
The summer I turned 11, and for several summers after, I got to realize those dreams! My Mom took us to Boston and its surrounding beaches for the summer. I was in heaven. I learned to say tonic water, when I wanted a soda and to use the adjective wicked as a synonym for very. I found that my cousins loved saying my name, which is Shawn- but they pronounced it Shoe-on.
The first thing I did was to find a sailor’s knot bracelet, a rope of braided twine one could find at just about any store on the seashore, probably even in town. I wore that bracelet all through the summer and as far into the fall, back home in Denver, as it would last before falling apart. It was my constant connection to a world beyond the altitude and sun and Rocky Mountains of my Denver hometown region.
As summer comes into full swing- I find myself wondering if there were children, or adults, who had dreams of the adventures Denver had to offer in comparison to their own hometowns. Share with me, I’ll answer any questions with the gentleness to nurture that dream!
