There are 8 states and 12 cities that celebrate and observe Cesar Chavez Day. Denver and Colorado are on those lists!

César Estrada Chávez was born on March 31, 1927 and sadly passed away on April 23, 1993. Chávez was one of the founders of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW) and dedicated his life’s work to obtain and maintain equality, justice and dignity for farm workers across the U.S., through tactful non-violent strategies, such as strikes, boycotts, fasts and pilgrimages.

This Saturday, March 29, 2008 The César Chávez Peace and Justice Committee of Denver (CCPJC) will be kicking off the Seventh Annual César Chávez Day Celebration. This year’s celebration will begin with a 9:00 a.m. multi-denominational Speak Out at the St. Cajetan’s Event Center (Auraria Campus, 900 Auraria Pkwy) and will be followed by a 10:30 a.m. march to the Denver Inner City Parish (910 Galapago St.) where the celebration will follow.

The Cesar Chavez Day community celebration is free and will feature live entertainment, free food, vendors and leadership awards. This year’s public speakers include Nita Gonzales, City Councilman Paul López and Sarif Aleem.
