Monday’s Must Hear? – The Soundwalk!

Sometimes the things that can bring the most surprise aren’t big and flashy. Sometimes, they aren’t even a place or a building or a memorial. Sometimes they aren’t even to be seen but rather heard. This is certainly the case for this weeks Must See…Soundwalk! On Curtis Street between 15th and 16th Streets is a gem of the Mile High City that few have witnessed with their eyes and ears open. Most people who walk down the street simply think they are hearing things and pay little attention to the innocuous grates that line this one block of Denver. Then …read more

Monday’s Must See: The Brown Palace

The Brown Palace!
Henry Cordes Brown, who was originally from Ohio, brought his family to Denver and homesteaded on the 160 acres that is now known as Capitol Hill. Over the years he built up the neighborhood into one of the most swank in Denver at the time. Unfortunately he lost his fortune in economic crisis of 1877 and was forced to sell his estate. not one to be kept down long, he was back in the flush by 1880. Several years later when he was refused entrance into Denver’s fanciest Hotel, The Windsor, because he was wearing his cowboy …read more

American Gothic – On Broadway

American Gothic – On Broadway

I still remember the first time Shawn Marie and I drove down Broadway and I saw Flossy McGrew’s. As we neared the place I saw the sun glinting off of what looked like a skeleton in a coffin, adorned with chains and other grinning skulls. I thought to myself that I wasn’t seeing what I was seeing, there was no way that was a huge green face with bulging eyes sticking out of a window….. was it?
Turns out, that’s exactly what it was.
Being someone who enjoys the macabre from time to time, I knew I had to get in …read more

The Beautiful House

The Beautiful House

On my first trip to Denver, Shawn Marie said that we absolutely had to go to this restaurant. She mentioned it to her Dad, who laughed a little and said that oh yes, I had to experience it before we went back to Las Vegas. A friend of Shawn Marie’s said she would take us, because I just had to go.
The name of this awesome place?
Why, Casa Bonita, of course!
If you aren’t a Denver native (or anyone who has lived here for a while), Casa Bonita may not seem like some place that you should laugh about when you …read more

Put Me In Coach…

Put Me In Coach…

I’m a big nature lover. When we moved to Denver I was fascinated by the abundance of wildlife all around us. Squirrels, foxes, and all kinds of birds. And when I say that, I mean that there are a LOT of birds here in Denver.
Mainly though, there are geese. Tons and tons of geese. They are everywhere, from parks to school yards to grassy shoulders of the highway. And apparently, they are also invading Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. What could they do, what with Spring Training around the corner and a whole bunch of geese …read more

Monday Mix n Mash First Ladies and Failures Edition:

As we have mentioned before, Denver has yet to produce a President- but we do have a few Dolly Madison Ice Cream shops and Bakeries! Dolly Madison was first lady to President James Madison.
We also mentioned the connection between President Eisenhower and Denver, but failed to let you know that Mamie Eisenhower, his wife and therefore First Lady, though not born here- grew up here.
John Hinckley, who tried to assassinate President Reagan because of his love for Jodie Foster, planned the assassination while staying in a motel on West Colfax where he reportedly walked across the street to eat …read more

That Sinking Feeling…

That Sinking Feeling…

Traffic was a nightmare on the commute tonight when a 40 foot sinkhole collapsed part of I-25 north bound. The cause of the sinkhole was said to be a water main break, and estimated to be up to 16 feet deep.
The sinkhole is located a quarter mile north of the Interstate 70 interchange, locally known as the Mousetrap, right near 56th Avenue.
For me, it took me two and a half hours to make the trip from my work to my home, which usually takes about 20 minutes in the afternoons. There’s no word on when it will be cleared …read more

Broncos and Mammoths and…a Tiger? Oh My!

A Bengal tiger cub was confiscated today in Centennial, Colorado, after police were sent photos of the tiger traveling through Denver in an SUV, and other reports that had come in that there was a tiger living in someone’s backyard. Police moved in today with wildlife agents to take control of the tiger and place him in a safe habitat until they figure out where he will be placed permanently.
Apparently you are allowed to have a tiger in Denver, but only with proper licensing and adequate caging. The owner of this tiger, however, was lacking the license and the caging.
No …read more
