12 Things to do in Denver

12 Things to do in Denver

This is a guest post from Mary Jo Manzanares, Travel & Culture Channel Editor and blogger at Flyaway Cafe

Here’s my list of a dozen enjoyable, relaxing, and fun things to do in the Mile High City:

Visit the Denver Art Museum (south end of the Civic Center on 14th Avenue Parkway).  Its facade of glass tiles makes the building itself a work of art (in photo above).
Visit Colorado’s State Capitol building (between East 14th and East Colfax).  Go up the steps at the west entrance, and stand on the 13th step.  You’ll be one mile above sea level – …read more

Monday’s Must Hear? – The Soundwalk!

Monday’s Must Hear? – The Soundwalk!

Sometimes the things that can bring the most surprise aren’t big and flashy. Sometimes, they aren’t even a place or a building or a memorial. Sometimes they aren’t even to be seen but rather heard. This is certainly the case for this weeks Must See…Soundwalk! On Curtis Street between 15th and 16th Streets is a gem of the Mile High City that few have witnessed with their eyes and ears open. Most people who walk down the street simply think they are hearing things and pay little attention to the innocuous grates that line this one block of Denver. Then …read more

Photo Op: The Cow Parade In Denver

Photo Op: The Cow Parade In Denver

The Cow Parade was in Denver the very first time I visited this awesome city. This particular cow was shot by Flickr user GISuser.
I saw a cow painted in Broncos colors, and another one in the park! After the cows were “rounded up”, they were all auctioned off for charity. I’m pretty lucky, because I also saw the Cow Parade when it came through Las Vegas, where I’m from.

Finding Faith in Denver

Finding Faith in Denver

Not far from the Capitol Building rises the twin spires of the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The Cathedral started out as a small church in 1860, named St. Mary’s Parish Church, and was the first Catholic church in Colorado. In 1868 the parish Father was appointed as Bishop of Colorado, and so the little parish church became the Cathedral.
Serious work began on the Cathedral in 1890 and continued until 1911, when the twin spires were capped. It was dedicated in 1921 as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and consecrated in 1921 before it was elevated to …read more

Ah,Touching Down at a Mile-High

Ah,Touching Down at a Mile-High

Do your travel plans include a layover at Denver International Airport? While it would be ideal to just hop a bus and come into town to enjoy what Denver has to offer, unless your layover is at the very least four hours, you will probably want to stay at the airport.
This isn’t such a bad thing- Denver International Airport has a lot to offer.
Public art was commissioned for the terminal and concourses. A fountain greets you as you embark off the escalator from the airport train and into the Main, Jeppesen, Terminal. There are many recognizable chain restaurants, a deli …read more

Monday’s Must See: The Capitol Building

Monday’s Must See: The Capitol Building

When catching a glimpse of Colorado’s Capitol Building you may imagine yourself to be in Georgia or Iowa if you have only noticed the Gold Dome. However, if you take a longer look and go beyond the Dazzling top of the building decorating Denver’s skyline- why you might just feel like you are in the Nation’s Capitol itself! Even the streets, Lincoln and Pennsylvania, that surround Colorado’s Capitol building are reminiscent of our Nation’s Capitol. This is no coincidence, The Capitol Building of Colorado was built in the image of the one in DC.
Though it had an admirable start to …read more
